With more than 7,800 new students arriving at UA this fall, many are looking for fun and exciting ways to meet new people while learning more about choosing a major and getting information about events at the UA. Luckily for them, Wildcat Welcome Week begins today and runs through Friday on the UA Mall. It will help answer questions and concerns, inform students about activities and clubs, and entertain.
This week's events:
Monday Madness on the Mall (today 11 a.m. -1 p.m.)
The madness officially kicks off today as Campus Recreation and Eegee's sponsor a fun-filled day of games, entertainment and music. Everywhere you turn, you'll find something different - from table top football to "The Big Shoe" to free T-shirts (must play to win) to demonstrations to free Eegee's drinks and live music.
Ask Me (today and tomorrow 7 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
Students in need of a helpful hand to answer questions and concerns can stop by the various "Ask Me" booths for guidance. The booths will be located at the Student Union Memorial Center on the Mall side, the Administration building, the Harvill building, the Integrated Learning Center and the Park Student Union. The representatives at these booths will be able to answer various UA questions, such as where to find certain buildings and classrooms, where to pick up Zona Zoo passes, how to put money on your CatCard or how to join a club or organization.
Psychology Wildcat Welcome (today 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.) Main hallway, second floor, Psychology building.
Students will get their minds engaged in the study of mind and behavior today when the psychology department provides a welcome to students interested in the field or who are currently enrolled in the major. Faculty from all fields of psychology represented in the department will be at the event to talk with students and answer any questions they may have. Additionally, a variety of handouts and snacks will be provided.
Vendor Fair (Today - Wednesday 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
The Center for Student Involvement and Leadership will be sponsoring a vendor fair in which merchants will be offering goods and services ranging from banking and newspaper subscriptions to jewelry.
CSIL's mission is to offer UA students a wide array of opportunities to enjoy the collegiate experience by getting students involved in campus life and learning more about becoming leaders. Some of the opportunities include joining the University Activities Board, which helps plan Family Weekend and big-name concerts and comedy acts, joining a fraternity or sorority and various leadership opportunities like participation in the Associated Students of the University of Arizona.
Back to School Poster Sale (Today - Friday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.)
Students sick of looking at the blank white walls in their dorm rooms or apartments can now spruce up their digs with posters. The Back to School Poster Sale, sponsored by UAB, can help decorate rooms with a variety of posters from movies, art, music, black & white photography and more.
Wildcat Night at the Student Recreation Center (Today 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.)
Students unable to play for Lute Olsen and Mike Stoops can come by the SRC tonight and meet the 40 sport clubs on campus (rugby, soccer, lacrosse, ice hockey, ultimate, martial arts, etc). Information on intramurals, special programs, fitness programs, aquatics and outdoor adventures will also be available. A full itinerary with dates and fees is available online at http://campusrec.arizona.edu/
Community Day Open House on the Mall (tomorrow 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
For students sick of what living on campus has to offer, come to the Community Day Open House to get to know what Tucson has to offer besides East University Boulevard, the Rec Center and the union. Various businesses and organizations from throughout the Tucson and UA communities will be on hand with information and ideas.
Social Justice Leadership Center Open House (tomorrow 7: 30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.) fourth floor, Student Union Memorial Center
Students interested in learning how to become an advocate for social justice can visit the SJLC to discover the resources it can provide on issues relating to race, gender, ability, sexual orientation, class, religion and ethnicity.
Drums Across Cultures (Wednesday 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.) UA Mall
The UA campus is very diverse. Of the 7,800 new students expected this semester, 6,000 are freshmen and 1,800 are transfer students from two-year colleges. All of the states in the union are represented this year, along with 135 foreign countries. The Department of Multicultural Programs and Services will be sponsoring Drums Across Cultures. Students interested in becoming more aware of other cultures can come out and listen to the heart-pounding sounds of drums from around the world.
"Sea of Red" Spirit Day (Thursday)
It's time to whip out those UA butt shorts, hats, T-shirts and basketball shorts. Thursday is Spirit Day, the goal of which is to get as many people to wear Wildcat red as possible. Everyone on campus is encouraged to bear down and wear his or her UA red to show Wildcat pride. For red UA apparel, visit UofA Bookstores, which carry a wide variety of items.
CatFest (Friday 6 p.m.) Centennial Hall
Wildcat Welcome Week ends by rocking out with CatFest. Students are encouraged to come celebrate a night of traditions, involvement opportunities and the beginning of a new school year with a free concert. The event is sponsored by ASUA and UAB.
Wildcat Welcome Week runs through Friday. A full list of activities is available online at: http://www.union.arizona.edu/welcome/schedule.php
