Ruggers seek walk-on locks

The Arizona men's club rugby team is holding open tryouts for its lock position at today's practice.

Arizona head coach Dave Sitton said in a press release yesterday that any UA student who stands at least 6-foot-3 and weighs 220 pounds or more is invited to try and join the Ruggers' 85-person roster. The team begins its season the weekend of Oct. 21 with road games against Texas and Baylor.

The lock position is similar to the tackle in American football, Sitton said, but locks still carry the ball on occasion.

"There are hundreds of former football guards and tackles on campus who dream of running with the football," he said. "We're looking for them."

The Ruggers practice today from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Rincon Vista field, located at the corner of East 15th Street and South Tucson Boulevard.
