Regents appoint Shelton to 3-year term to start July 1

Robert Shelton from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill was chosen Friday to be the 19th UA president.

The Arizona Board of Regents voted unanimously on the appointment at 2:30 p.m. Friday, after meeting in an executive session that began at 10 a.m. in the "Swede" Johnson building.

Administrators mum on tuition hike

Governor asked universities to keep this year's increase as low as possible

Top UA officials are keeping a tight lip about the university's fiscal year 2007 tuition proposal, which is expected to be released today.

In a recent interview with the Arizona Daily Wildcat, President Peter Likins refused to comment on specifics of the proposal, saying he would discuss it only after it had been released to the public. Other top officials contacted by the Wildcat did not return calls on the subject. [Read article]

Officials model cooking drugs

PHOENIX - The use of methamphetamines has reached epidemic proportions in Arizona, said the Arizona attorney general, who proved how easy it is to make the drugs during a demonstration Friday.

A criminalist from the Arizona Department of Public Safety crime lab combined over-the-counter cold medication, drain cleaner and iodine tablets to demonstrate the simplicity of making methamphetamines. [Read article]

Bookstore's health kit provides care in a box

The UofA Bookstores are continuing efforts to protect students' health by selling the "College Health Kit," but some students said the bundle of goods is too expensive or not necessary.

The kit, produced by LifeToolBooks, contains about 40 different items, including antibiotic ointment, cough drops, nasal spray, tweezers, a thermometer, a condom, tea bags, honey sticks and a health guidebook. [Read article]

Student government applications available

The student government is accepting applications this week for elected positions.

The executive positions for the Associated Students of the University of Arizona are president, executive vice president, administrative vice president and senator.

Packets can be picked up in the ASUA office on the third floor of the Student Union Memorial Center.

Likins, regents laud Shelton as best pick for UA president

Regents, administrators and students agreed that Robert Shelton, who was named UA president Friday, was the best candidate for the job, as he was the only presidential candidate recommended by all representative groups on campus.

Shelton, the executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, was unanimously chosen Friday by the Arizona Board of Regents to succeed President Peter Likins on July 1. [Read article]

Graduates, undergrads unite to draft student tuition proposal

Student representative groups worked together this year to submit a unified tuition proposal today, unlike last year when undergraduate and graduate officials were divided.

Ben Graff, student regent for the Arizona Board of Regents, said when two student groups on campus aren't on the same page, it damages students' credibility with the administrators and regents.

Graff said after serving as a mediator between Arizona Students' Association and the Graduate and Professional Student Council, he is glad the groups have put aside their differences for the sake of a strong student voice. [Read article]

Faculty Senate Briefs

The Faculty Senate will convene today to decide on a number of issues that include adding new programs, renaming old ones and rewording policy. Items that pass in the senate today will move up to the Arizona Board of Regents for final approval.

The meeting is open to the public and will take place at 3 p.m. in the College of Law building, Room 146.

Double Degree Ambiguity

The faculty senate is proposing to amend the general catalog's statement on second degrees and majors to make the language less open to interpretation. [Read article]

In Friday's article "Cats not willing to heel," men's basketball freshman forward Marcus Williams was quoted incorrectly. The quote should have read "Every high school basketball player dreams of going to North Carolina and play the Tar Heels."
