Tucsonans walk to fund search for ALS cure

A man who worked at the UA for 17 years and was forced to retire after he was diagnosed with a fatal disease is encouraging students and staff to participate in a walk to raise money for research for Lou Gehrig's disease.

Mike Wetzel, 45, managed the UA catering department and campus convenience stores before retiring in September 2003 after being diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

The Wildcats' (15-5, 6-3 Pacific 10 Conference) hopes for Murphey Stadium to receive a bid to be one of six first round host sites - after Arizona clinched a share of the Pac-10 title with a 2-0 win over Oregon Sunday - ultimately fell short. [Read article]

Carousels remind most of us of childhood days at the carnival and fighting with siblings over who got to ride which animal. However, Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel," - which will be put on by the Arizona Repertory Theatre - does not follow traditional musical styles when it touches on much deeper and realistic issues.

"It's a dark story. The lead character is a wife-beater. It's about where relationships can go and how people can redeem themselves," said director and theatre arts professor Harold Dixon.  [ Read article]
