Small kiln fire causes cancelled classes, but minimal damage

The Art building, 1031 N. Olive Road, was evacuated around 11 a.m. yesterday when wax buildup in a kiln ignited a small fire, officials said.

A bronze casting class was melting the wax off their ceramic molds when the wax buildup in the kiln caught fire, said Carlton Bradford, sculpture instructor and shop technician.

Issue of the week: The Democrats' missing mojo photo

This election year, the Democrats were trounced by Bush's re-election and the Republicans took the majority in both the Senate and the the House. In the week after the election, the question is, how can Democrats recover after the elections clearly showed that their party is becoming less and less important in the eyes of the people?

Pick your issues and don't budge

First of all, the Democrats need to stop trying to fight for voters on issues that are Republican wedge issues. The Republicans have already brainwashed the people who are swayed by these issues to stay on their side. The "God, guns and gays" voters aren't going to listen to arguments. Trying to provide logical arguments on issues like these will only further galvanize and embolden a bunch ignorant people against them who otherwise probably wouldn't vote. They should just hope that these people will eventually realize that maybe things weren't so perfect back in 1952. [Read article]

Cats to retire Bibby's UA jersey after tomorrow's exhibition tilt

The Arizona men's basketball team plays its last exhibition game tomorrow at 7 p.m. in McKale Center, but the real buzz of the evening won't happen until after the game is over.

The Wildcats will hang the No. 10 jersey of former star UA point guard Mike Bibby on the McKale wall.

Bibby, who led the Wildcats to their only national championship, will be the third Arizona player to have his jersey retired, joining Sean Elliott and Steve Kerr. [Read article]

Carousels remind most of us of childhood days at the carnival and fighting with siblings over who got to ride which animal. However, Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel," - which will be put on by the Arizona Repertory Theatre - does not follow traditional musical styles when it touches on much deeper and realistic issues.

"It's a dark story. The lead character is a wife-beater. It's about where relationships can go and how people can redeem themselves," said director and theatre arts professor Harold Dixon.  [ Read article]
