The Arizona swim and dive teams ran into the choppy waves of Stanford and California this weekend at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, dropping three of four meets.
The No. 4 women's team picked up the Wildcats' lone victory, beating the No. 7 Golden Bears 144-99 Friday, while the No. 5 men's team fell to No. 4 Cal 136-97.
Saturday's meet against the Cardinal proved to be even worse for UA as Stanford picked up the sweep.
The men lost 155-85 to the No. 1 Cardinal, and the women fell 165-135 to the No. 8 Stanford women for their first loss of the year.
"We really got a swimming lesson from both of these teams this weekend," said UA head coach Frank Busch. "I hope it fuels our fire more for the end (of the season)."
Busch said the teams had good performances, just not enough to put them in the win column.
Although Arizona struggled to round up team wins over the weekend, a number of Wildcats held rank.
Against Stanford, freshman Lacey Nymeyer took first in the 200-yard and 100y freestyle while junior Jenna Gresdal won the 100y and 50y backstroke events. Senior Jessica Hayes captured the 200y backstroke, and senior Emily Mason took first in the 500y freestyle with a time of 4:49.85.
The women also took first in the 400y freestyle relay. Nymeyer, Hayes, junior Marshi Smith and freshman Courtney Cashion clocked in at 3:24.53.
In the diving well, Senior Claire Febvay won the 3-meter competition.
"We swam great and we swam tough but we just were not as prepared as Stanford," Mason said. "As for Cal, we swam better."
Junior Lyndon Ferns was the most successful swimmer on the men's side, winning both the 50y and 100y freestyle.
Busch said now the team is in a phase where they have to swim faster and tune up.
"Hopefully, next week we will just do better," he said.
The Wildcats will be in the pool again next weekend when they travel to Austin, Texas, to take on Texas Friday and Saturday.
