The No. 22 ranked Wildcat baseball team not only looked like the Cleveland Indians yesterday, but they played like them too.

Arizona (11-2) pounded the New Mexico Aggies 15-4 yesterday at Sancet Field in the last of a 13-game homestand. The Aggies (3-6) could not find an answer for Arizona first baseman Jeff Gjerde. Gjerde had two triples in a 3-for-5 effort at the plate with 2 runs scored and three RBI.

"They came out and we kind of overwhelmed them with our offense, and our pitching was really good, also. It was a real good team to play before a team like (Cal-State) Fullerton," Gjerde said.

The pitching was effective, with starter Clay Crossan (1-1) pitched seven innings and allowed all four runs. Crossan was relieved by senior Kirt Kishita and junior transfer Tyler Haddix.

"I just went out there and tried to keep us close, because I knew that the offense was hot and that they would score a lot of runs for us," Crossan said. "Our defense kept us in and our hitting came through as always; it was a good win."

The game marked the offensive return of third baseman Jake Thrower who up until today had been mired in a slump. Thrower was a home run short of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI.

"We've got several hot hitters, Gjerde's one of them of course and I'm awfully glad to see Thrower break out of his slump, the last few times up he hit the ball very hard and got three hits," Arizona head coach Jerry Kindall said.

Notes: The Wildcats received some recognition over the weekend with designated hitter Kenny Corley's nomination for Pacific 10 Conference player of the week, and Shawn Barrington's nomination for Pac-10 pitcher of the week after the Wildcats won two of three games in a series with then No. 21 Texas A&M.

"I'm glad those guys are getting recognition," Kindall said.
