A UA senior was killed Friday in San Luis Obispo, Calif. by a driver allegedly under the influence of alcohol.Christopher Ruhle, 22, died on impact, and another passenger, Denise Waters, died a short time after the head-on collision.
Ruhle was visiting his family and his girlfriend, Amy Hendrick, for Valentine's Day and was driving to his girlfriend's home in a Honda Civic at the time of the accident.
Mark Anthony Romero, 31, of Morro Bay, Calif., was driving his Ford Bronco II on a suspended license, having been convicted of drinking and driving two days earlier, according to Colleen Kevany of the San Luis Obispo Police Department.
Medical reports estimated the blood sample taken from Romero shortly after the accident indicated a blood alcohol content of 0.28, Kevany said. The department is still awaiting the legal amount, which is usually lower than the medical estimate.
Romero was taken to Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo and admitted in critical condition. He was arrested at the hospital, and will be charged with two counts of homicide when he is released, according to police reports.
Ruhle's father, Roger Ruhle, said, "It was a terrible accident. My son was killed innocently. I'll miss him a lot."
Ruhle was majoring in media arts, with a split minor in communications and Spanish. He was looking forward to returning to California to work for the TV show "Extra" after graduating in May, his father said.
Hendrick, a student at California State Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo, was released from French Hospital with a broken elbow and facial cuts. The fourth passenger, Marsha McIndoe, is still in the hospital with broken ribs, Ruhle's father said.
Ruhle's funeral was held Tuesday in Agoura, Calif.
Oak Park High School in Agoura is planning to establish a scholarship and a performing arts building in Ruhle's memory, he said.
"He was going to be the first kid in my family to graduate from college, and I know he was proud of that."
