The Arizona track and field team continued their early season success with another strong showing over the weekend at the Willie Williams Classic at Drachman Stadium.

Joining the Wildcats were teams from Arizona State, Brigham Young, Boise State, Central Arizona, Idaho and Rutgers. The meet was non-scoring and was open to all comers.

"Overall, we had many excellent performances this weekend, and everyone competing are making great progress," UA head coach Dave Murray said.

The Wildcats were paced by a strong effort in the field events, as two athletes set career bests in the hammer throw. Senior Holly Montoya won the women's hammer with an NCAA outdoor provisional qualifying mark of 171 feet, 8 inches. Her effort also established a new outdoor school record. Freshman Tapio Kolunsarka finished second in the men's hammer with a NCAA provisional mark of 220-11.

Junior Chima Ugwu again showed that he is one of the best throwers in the nation, as he paced the Wildcats with two victories. Ugwu won the shot put with a toss of 62-10 3/4 and the discus with a mark of 183-2.

On March 2, at the Bill Sawyer Invitational at Arizona State, Ugwu automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on May 29-June 1, in the shot put with a toss of 63-6 3/4.

Sophomore pole vaulter Dominic Johnson finished fourth overall and won the collegiate division with a vault of 16-6 3/4.

Senior Nicole Engstrom, who is continuing her comeback from off-season arm surgery, had an impressive showing in the women's discus finishing second with a mark of 151-6.

On the track, the Wildcats were led by a sweep of the 1,500-meter races. Sophomore Bob Keino took the men's title with a time of 3 minutes, 47.75 seconds and junior Ann Colonna won the women's in 4:31.71.

On the women's side, senior Michelle Johnson won the 400 intermediate hurdles with a time of 58.10. Freshman Amy Skieresz won the women's 3,000 in a NCAA provisional time of 9:38.63. The UA women also captured the 4x100 and 4x400 relays with good early season times of 45.93 and 3:43, respectively.

For the men, junior Luther Kopf won the 800 in a time of 1:50.87.

Last weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, six Wildcats competed at the prestigious event and brought home four All-America awards.

Junior Viola Schaffer finished fifth overall in the women's 5,000, for the second straight year at the championships, with a time of 16:13.30.

Keino also garnered All-American honors in the men's 3,000 by finishing fifth overall with a time of 7:56.78. Keino had qualified for the mile run as well, but he chose to concentrate on the 3,000.

Ugwu, competing in the shot put, had a toss of 61-3 good for fourth place overall.

Senior Aaron Corcorran placed 11th in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 62-7 1/4, and Kolunsarka finished 12th with a mark of 62-5 1/4.

The only other Wildcat competing was Johnson who ran in the women's 55 hurdles. Johnson advanced to the semifinal heat after recording a preliminary time of 7.78. In the semifinals, however, Johnson was unable to advance.
