A former Tucson city councilman was arrested on DUI charges by university police Sunday evening.

Bruce Wheeler, 48, of the 200 block of North Granada Ave., was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol and DUI with a blood-alcohol concentration above .10. He was later released.

Wheeler was pulled over by a university police officer at 7:41 p.m. near the intersection of North Fourth Avenue and East Seventh Street. The University of Arizona Police Department was participating in the Southern Arizona DUI Task Force during the St. Patrick's Day weekend.

Police reports state the car Wheeler was driving swerved over the center line while traveling northbound on Fourth Avenue. Wheeler failed field sobriety tests, and an Intoxilyzer test later showed his blood alcohol concentration was .145. The legal limit in Arizona is .10.

While at UAPD headquarters, Wheeler reportedly asked to call Tucson police chief Doug Smith. Police reports indicate none of the university police officers knew the phone number, but one of the officers notified the Tucson Police Department of the incident per Wheeler's request.

TPD executive officer Lt. Robert Lehner said, "To the best of my knowledge, no such call was made. Frankly, I would be surprised if a call like that was made."

Smith has been on vacation since last Monday and was unavailable for comment.

Wheeler, who previously served as vice mayor of Tucson and was a mayoral candidate last year, was also unavailable for comment.
