Editor:
After reading Ms. Rivera's article entitled, "Remark about residence hall hypocritical" (March 6), I could not help but roll my eyes and shake my head. Writing an article about racism, sexism or violence on campus seems just, but making a fuss over a dormitory seems a bit extreme. Even worse, comparing your situation, where an individual allegedly called your dorm a "piece of shit," to the ongoing struggles that MEChA has had to face with Kappa Sigma seems ridiculous! As a Hispanic, you of all people should know the difference between the magnitude of a racial slur and an opinion about a dormitory. Who really cares about their dorm that much, anyway?
Well, apparently, Ms. Rivera does. I am sure that there are many other residents, resident assistants, hall directors and residence life employees that like Graham-Greenlee also. However, I could not imagine a majority of them getting so worked up over someone criticizing the dormitory that they live in or work at. Perhaps I am wrong, though.
I do agree that we are all different people who feel passion in various ways. But passionately comparing your situation to that of MEChA's seems very disrespectful. Maybe next time you should think about the seriousness of someone poking fun of your dorm versus the damaging effect of being called a "spic."
