What are three of the most important things you would like to see accomplished while you are in office?

Ryan Anderson

  • Political science junior
  • Vice president of membership of the Interfraternity Council
  • ASUA Senate aide

I'd like to work with the vice president of programs and services on the campus safety issue in order to secure more funds for the Escort Service and to get more "blue light" phones on campus. For the Escort Service, I want to work on getting a new van and better benefits for the employees.

I want to put an office of internships in the Department of Student Programs, to work with internships for all departments and all the different colleges on the university.

And I want to increase campus pride by revitalizing ASUA concerts by working together with the University Activities Board.

Gilbert Davidson

  • Public management junior
  • Currently ASUA Senator
  • Member of the Student Union Advisory Board, and chair of the Food Services Committee

I want to continue working with Facilities Management on campus improvements, including improving the surface of roads around campus and increasing the number of bike racks.

I'd like to continue my efforts to include students in the remodeling of the Student Union. I'd like to see students have voting options, oversee the budget and have a choice in what restaurants are in the union.

Last, I'd like to continue working on solving some of the internal issues of ASUA, including problems with clarity, for example, in ASUA's bylaws.

David Kramer

  • Management and information systems sophomore
  • ASUA Senate aide
  • Club advocate
I'd like to improve the Career Services Center. I'd like to be on the Career Services Team and the Employees Relations Team to help with recruitment and to increase advertisement of the center.

I'd like to work with the vice president of clubs and organizations on nondiscriminatory funding for clubs because I've seen many faults in the funding guidelines.

My last issue is called campus beautification. I'd like to improve the surface of roads around campus by repaving them, and I'd like to work on the general upkeep around campus.

Casey Cuny

  • Marketing and communications sophomore
  • ASUA Senate aide
  • Spires Spring Fling co-chair
I think the number of emergency "blue light" phones around campus should at least be doubled to make students feel safer and make a difference in students' attitudes about campus.

Secondly, I want to increase student voter registration and awareness concerning the presidential election. I think Senate should work with the ASUA Cabinet on this, because students don't know where to go, and they don't take the time to go and register.

And I want to make ASUA more accessible to every student. I want to start at the freshman level by informing students about ASUA and how they can get involved.

Jim Howarth

  • Electrical engineering sophomore
  • Worked on ASUA Senate campaign
  • Volunteered for Spring Fling
I'd like to see more student involvement in administrative decisions and in the general management overall of the university. I'd like to change the overall mood of the students. They no longer feel like the number one priority.

I would also like to increase ASUA Senate visibility on campus. ASUA is playing kind of a shrinking role on this campus. We need to get into Residence Halls, on the Mall and in the Student Union.

And my last issue is campus safety. I'd like to increase police patrols, the number of "blue light" phones, and lighting in high risk areas around campus, for example, at ATM machines and on Park Avenue.

Steve Lytle

  • Management and information systems senior

Number one I'd like to see a bar in the Student Union. I think this would provide a common ground for the older college students to get together. The bar would have only beer and there would be a four- to five-drink maximum.

Second, I'd like to broaden All Aboard and Pocket Money to include the stores and restaurants surrounding the campus in order to offer a better variety to students.

Last, I'd like to help KAMP student radio get an FM station to provide the station with an opportunity to grow mature with the rest of the campus.

Jim Mellinger

  • Business and public administration sophomore
  • ASUA presidential aide
  • Assistant corporate director of Spring Fling
Basically, my platform revolves around the school spirit and pride of students. I'd like to make a lottery for UA alumni, instead of students, so that more students can go to the basketball games.

I'd like to improve the landmarks around campus so students have more places to relax, and the landmarks also make the campus look better.

Last, I'd like to try and get more concerts at McKale and other centers on campus. The revenues from these concerts would go to scholarships and financial aid programs. This would be another way for students to hang out together and feel pride for their school.

Kim Montanaro

  • Political science and history sophomore
  • ASUA chief-of-staff
  • Student member of Career Services Planning Team
  • Residence Hall Association representative
  • Associated Students of Arizona staff member

I'd like to target specific classes or professors who are guilty of violating the university finals policy and identify areas where it's occurring and come up with a workable solution.

Promote the student mentoring program. I think every student on campus should be given this opportunity; it gets you involved.

Find groups of students and have them tour and learn what the Career Services has to offer.

Madison O'Neil

  • Communications junior
  • Recorder for ASUA Senate
  • Two-year ASUA Senate aide
  • Campaign assistant

My main goal is to get the Senate functioning as a whole unit rather than a group of eight people with individual pet projects.

Make the Senate more accessible through better publicity of the meetings and use of the Internet, the impetus for which has started this year.

I'd like to see the Senate be a forum for students who have important issues that need to be addressed and have the projects the Senate tackles through the year be those student issues.

Mary Peterson

  • Sociology senior
  • Resident assistant at Yavapai Residence Hall
  • World Health Organization moderator of the Model United Nations
  • Former ASUA Senate aide

The general areas I am committed to as a senator are: leadership, diversity, awareness and communication.

I want to promote the central calendar, which contains sporting events, ASUA activities; I would like to see it expanded on voice mail and have a bulletin board in the Student Union in one central place that would promote activities.

A leaders luncheon that would develop leadership skills, provide networking and promote unity on campus.

Have a "Homeless for the night" camp out on the mall; we'd provide a cardboard box for students and have the homeless discuss what it means to live on the streets.

J.J. Rico

  • Political science and media arts sophomore
  • ASUA Senate aide
  • Publicity chair for ASUA/University Learning Center youth basketball league
  • Two-year social chair for MEChA

Increase awareness of ASUA and campus issues and increase student involvement in both.

Improve accessibility with RSVP and help change student information accessibility.

Hold student campus climate forums; create a dialogue between clubs and organizations, open dialogue on the university campus as a whole.

Lauren Sliger

  • Molecular and cellular biology and economics junior
  • Director for the ASUA Appropriations Board
  • Member of the Order of Omega

Implement a freshman forum in which representatives from clubs and organizations would give presentations in residence halls to actively recruit members.

I would encourage a four-year faculty mentoring program for all departments; this would allow students to develop a personal relationship with their professor and would lead to academic advising, recommendations and connections for work or graduate school.

My third concern is a general campus awareness of ASUA. I promote campus outreach by publishing my office hours and soliciting student opinions.

Maile Weigele

  • Exercise and sport sciences junior
  • Director for the Campus Acquaintance Rape Educators
  • Member of the Order of Omega

Continue the ASUA/ULC Basketball League; it's another avenue for students to get involved.

Reach out to students to get them involved in the campus and Tucson community through the Mayor's Task Force on Youth Violence to serve as mentors and role models

Help other health and wellness organizations to help educate the UA population.
