Arizon freshman Heidi Hornbeek won the individual all-around title, but it wasn't enough against red-hot Oregon State.

The sixth-ranked Beavers (20-4 overall, 10-2 in the Pacific 10 Conference) proved to be a level above the other teams as they went on to win the Pac-10 title with a score of 196.775.

No. 11 Arizona State (13-4, 8-3) finished second (195.525), the eighth-ranked Wildcats (24-4, 9-3) came in third (195.175), and No. 9 UCLA (194.625), No. 16 Washington (193.150), No. 19 Stanford (193.0) and No. 26 California (192.375) followed.

"Oregon State was in another orbit," UA coach Jim Gault said. "We were in second place until we had a couple falls on the beam and that allowed ASU to pass us. But overall I think we had a good meet.

"I wasn't as happy with our effort on the floor, but we made up for it by scoring our highest on the bars in the school's history (49.325)."

While ASU's Katie Freeland was named Pac-10 gymnast of the year, Arizona freshman Heidi Hornbeek proved to be the best Saturday night as she won the all-around with a score of 39.5. The score ranks second in Arizona history behind a mark of 39.525 that Hornbeek set earlier this season. Washington's Klara Kudilkova and Oregon State's Amy Slack finished second and third, respectively, with scores of 39.445 and 39.275.

"I'm sure Heidi feels pretty good about herself," Gault said. "It was a good confidence boost for her to win it."

Other top three finishes for the Wildcats included sophomore Nancy Milberger and junior Becky Bowers. Milberger finished second on the beam with a 9.9 and Bowers tied for second on the bars with a 9.95.

And while Arizona did not reach their goal of winning the Pac-10, they still have next week against the Sun Devils to tune up before the NCAA Regionals on April 13.

"We can't let this meet bother us," Gault said. "We actually increased our (Regional Qualifying Score) with the 195. But it's a good thing that our regular season isn't over and we still have one more chance to improve our scores."

The ASU meet will be held on March 29 at McKale Center.
