The Arizona men's club rugby team avenged a 10-8 defeat to the University of San Diego earlier this season by defeating the Toreros 33-25 yesterday in the championship match of the Arizona Memorial Invitational Rugby Classic tournament.

Arizona won its eighth straight and led throughout the contest, but could not put the Toreros away until late in the second half.

The Wildcats (13-4 overall, 6-3 in the Pacific Coast Collegiate Rugby Conference) scored trys twice in the second half only to have San Diego answer with two trys of its own.

The Wildcats shut out New Mexico State on Saturday 28-0 to advance to Sunday's championship.

Strong winds and an even stronger overall performance by Colorado were too much for the Arizona track and field team to overcome over the weekend as it lost the Jim Click Wildcat Shootout for the first time ever.

The Buffaloes used good performances in the distance and field events on both the men's and women's sides to win the combined team championship with a score of 337. The Wildcats finished second with 298.

With the wind, Arizona sophomore Dominic Johnson turned in the most outstanding performance of the day, winning the pole vault with a mark of 17 feet, 3/4 inches. In doing so, he became the first UA vaulter ever to break the 17-foot barrier.

The Arizona women's swimming and diving team finished sixth at the NCAA Championships held over the weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Stanford won the event with 478 points, followed by Southern Methodist (397), the host Wolverines (363.5) and Southern Cal (356). Georgia (268) made up a 10-point final-day deficit to top the Wildcats, who finished with 256.

The Wildcats took the first title of the championships on Thursday when the team of Shannon Hosack, Liesl Kolbisen, Casey Legler and Ashley Tappin captured the 200-yard freestyle relay and set a pool record.

Arizona captured its second straight PONY/Lousiville Tournament yesterday in Fullerton, Calif., with a 9-0 pasting of Pacific 10 Conference rival Washington.

A bases-loaded error by losing pitcher Stephanie Burns sparked the Wildcats to a seven-run second inning and UA never looked back against the No.2 Huskies who fell to 28-5.

The No. 1-ranked Wildcats (25-3) dropped just one game en route to the championship - a 1-0 decision to eighth-ranked South Carolina.

In the semifinal game, UA bested No. 6 UNLV 6-3.

The key word in yesterday's game against Arizona State was revenge.

After two tough losses on Friday and Saturday, the Arizona baseball team made an about face, blowing away the Sun Devils 15-7 at Packard Stadium in Tempe.

"We played tough and aggressive," centerfielder Diego Rico said. "In the first games we made a couple of mental errors, but we stayed up and stayed strong. We know where we're at now."

The game was possibly was the worst loss of the season for Arizona State. The Sun Devils gave up 19 hits, six doubles and six stolen bases, all season highs - or lows depending on how one looks at it.

The victory for Arizona improves its record to 20-16 overall and 4-8 in the Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division. The Wildcats had 20 wins all of last season.

Saturday's game was a high-scoring affair, with ASU coming out on top 16-11. The Sun Devils won 8-7 Friday with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
