I was appalled to read Elizabeth Nida's letter in the March 27 Wildcat! How can she say "Braveheart" didn't deserve the Oscar because it was just glorifying violence - she didn't even see half of the movie! "Braveheart" has much more than violence. Sometimes we have to put aside our 20th century eyes and see things as they used to be.
William Wallace was a farmer in the 13th century. He lived one hundred years before Columbus and only a few hundred years after King Arthur. Wallace was not worried about being too violent. He was worried about raising crops, having children and growing old with his wife. This dream was shattered when his wife was killed and his town burned. He took a few hundred men out onto the battlefield, none had armor, with very few horses and no support from the Scottish nobles, and they, time after time, defeated the British army! This was not an act of violence! It was an act of tremendous bravery and survival!
William Wallace is one of the greatest heroes of history. He almost single-handedly won freedom for Scotland. Before you go criticizing something, at least stay to see the whole movie! People are so worried about being politically correct, they can't see anything else!
