Pain of Proposition 187 felt by everyone

Editor:

Alexandro Salomon Escamilla, in his March 20 letter, is rightfully concerned about Proposition 187. However, his vengeful diatribe, which the editors entitled "Country 'terrible' to those of color," will not help the opposition. The ranks of extremists are not filled by Anglos alone. We share a common humanity. Escamilla ignores the fact that many Anglos have fought for justice and equality for all Americans. For example, I joined the NAACP in 1952 when I was an assistant professor of physics at the University of Arkansas, a membership that was not very popular with many at that time and in that state. Also, my wife and I were the only Anglo members of "el Comite para Salvar el Barrio Historico," and the Barrio was saved from destruction by a highway.

His closing statement does not help the opposition to Proposition 187: "We didn't cross the border, the border crossed us, so you get the hell off Aztlan!" This is similar to the attitude of the Aryan Brotherhood, who also want separation. God save us in the future from the fate of the Blakans or Rwanda! There are many Anglos of goodwill who are also not masochists. We feel your pain but avoid your boot.
