Former L.A. Mayor Bradley suffers stroke; listed in fair condition

LOS ANGELES- Former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley suffered a stroke yesterday while recovering from heart surgery and was paralyzed on his right side, his doctor said.

Bradley, 78, was in fair condition following the 5 a.m. stroke at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, said Dr. Fred Alexander.

''We are concerned about him,'' Alexander said. ''Right now we do not see purposeful movement on the right side.''

Strokes can produce a wide variety of problems, including temporary or permanent paralysis of one side of the body, memory loss and difficulty talking or understanding speech.

Unexplained explosions destroy storage shed in rural Oregon

THE DALLES, Ore. - Three explosions ripped apart a burning storage shed in a rural area along the Columbia River, sending charred bomb-making literature drifting to the ground.

Bullets also were hurled through the air, indicating the shed was used to store ammunition, authorities said.

Two loud blasts were followed by a larger explosion about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, said Mike Roark, whose house is down a hill from the 900-square-foot shed.

Authorities evacuated 10 to 15 nearby homes late yesterday morning. There was no immediate explanation for the evacuations; the fire was out by that time.
