Last Wednesday night, I attended the election results announcement at Two Pesos. After announcing the winners of the senate and vice presidential races, the cafe became silent. Finally, the announcement of the new student body president. The race had been a close one from the get-go. Behind me, comments were being made about how big of a Greek landslide it was going to be. The elections commission announced, "With X many of votes, Rhonda Wilson is the new student body president." Half the cafe roared, while the other half became more silent than before. Then those same voices murmured things like how they are going to have to put up with anti-Greek crap for a year. Since I knew the candidates equally well, I decided to weave my way through the crowd to offer my congratulations to Rhonda and my condolences to Julie. I knew how hard both of them had campaigned. I had schedule managed for Ben Driggs last year and know it's tough just to be elected. As I progressed through the cafe, I heard all sorts of random voices saying how the Greeks will be screwed in the upcoming year and how they were "in for it."
The reality is that the presidency has nothing to do with the Greek system. I worked on Ben Driggs' staff this year, and I am not a Greek. Because of the fact that Ben is a Greek does not mean he will be helping the Greeks. He will be helping the students because that is his job. He is the student body president. He represents all of us. Rhonda, I am sure, will do the same thing. The most recent accomplishment of Ben's administration was to get the faculty senate to approve publishing teacher evaluations. These reports will not benefit just the Greek community, but all students. In total, Greeks make up 15 percent (if that much) of the student body. The Greek community is still a minority on this campus. Just because we have elected a president who is not Greek for the first time in four years does not make her an anti-Greek. Rhonda Wilson is not out to get the Greek community just because she is not part of it. She will just try to be the best president she can be. I am sure, had Julie Rice been elected, she would have done just as good a job. Greek or not does not matter. The president has to put the needs of the students first, not just those of one small sector.
