If it's true that losing makes you hungrier, Washington may be in trouble. The top-ranked Arizona softball team, which lost a 2-1 game to No. 4 Fresno State on Tuesday night, will be in Seattle tomorrow for a Pacific 10 Conference showdown with second-ranked Washington.
First pitch in the doubleheader is set for noon.
"(Losing) is definitely something you don't want to get used to," Arizona head coach Mike Candrea said.
In addition to wanting to get back into the win column, Arizona can also put themselves in the driver's seat in the conference race with a sweep. UA is 39-5 overall and at 11-1 in the Pac-10, and holds a two-game lead over the Huskies, who are 9-3 in the conference and 38-7 overall.
A sweep would give the Wildcats a four-game lead with 14 games remaining in the conference season. Arizona is 6-0 against teams left on its schedule and has yet to play against Oregon and Oregon State.
The last time UA and Washington met was at Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium on March 31. The Huskies earned a split by winning the first game 10-4 in extra innings, before Arizona took the second game 7-4.
Recently, Candrea has been vocal about his dislike of the team's mental attitude at the plate.
"There are times when we're not being aggressive enough," he said.
The player who has been aggressive at the plate recently is sophomore catcher Lety Pineda. Against Fresno State, Pineda was 4-for-6 with two home runs and four RBI.
"My dad reminded me to go out and take my rips," Pineda said. "I just wanted to take my cuts and feel good."
Despite his team's lack of aggressiveness at the plate, Candrea is confident about the Wildcats' chances.
"I think this team is ready to compete with anyone," he said. "We're right where we need to be."
The Wildcats will continue on the road next week when they travel to face rival Arizona State in Tempe on April 24. UA will play its final home games on May 3.
