While top-ranked Vicky Maes continues to roll, it is freshman Karen Goldstein who has emerged as the first big story at the Pacific 10 Conference Championship in Ojai, Calif.Upsetting the defending national champion, No. 4 Keri Phebus of UCLA, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, and then defeating Marcia Senn of Washington State, Goldstein is one of three Wildcats who have made it to the quarterfinals.
The men's team, also playing their Pac-10 tournament in Ojai, was not as fortunate with all of UA's singles players eliminated after the first day.
Considered to be on the bubble for the individual NCAA tournament, Goldstein (22-3 overall) and sophomore Betsy Miringoff (28-8 overall) both need a good showing in Ojai to make the tournament.
Coming into the tournament, it was thought Goldstein, who plays the No. 4 position for fourth-ranked UA, had a good enough record to qualify, but the quality of her wins was in doubt. Her next match is against 20th-ranked Sandra DeSilva of Stanford.
Miringoff, in the same boat as Goldstein, advanced to the third round by beating 64th-ranked Kim Shasby of Stanford 2-6, 7-6, 6-1. Miringoff and Maes are on track to meet each other in the semifinals.
Sophomore All-American Maes made it to the third round by defeating Eva Jimenez of Southern Cal 6-2, 6-4 in the second for her 44th win of the year.
Maes will face Katy Propstra of Arizona State today, while Miringoff takes on Karolina Bakalerova of Southern Cal. Both matches begin at 9:30 a.m.
Khristen Pietrucha defeated Elise Adams of Oregon 6-4, 6-0, then lost 6-2, 6-2 to ASU's Reka Cseresnyes. Junior Stephanie Sammaritano was ousted by Stanford's Julie Scott 6-1, 6-1.
While the tournament is individual, teams get a point for every player that wins a match. After the first day, Arizona leads with seven points, Stanford and USC both have five, while Arizona State has four.
For the men's team, junior Tom Haugland defeated ASU's Kimn Raiszadeh 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the first round, but lost to Stanford's No. 1, Jeff Salzenstein, 6-3, 7-6 in the afternoon.
Knocked out after their first round matches were Chris Jenkins, Henrik Wagner and Edward Schwartz.
Jenkins lost to USC's Manny Ramirez 6-4, 6-3. Wagner was defeated by Oregon's Dougal Williams 7-5, 6-2, and Schwartz lost 6-3, 6-4 to Washington's Ornello Arlati.
Doubles play begins today for both the men and women.
