Correction made 6-12-96

James E. Officer, who spent 25 years in the UA Anthropology Department and whose culturally-minded career spanned from associate U.S. commissioner of Indian Affairs to Chilean diplomat to summer school director in Guadalajara, died at age 71.

Officer died May 27 at St. Joseph's Hospital from complications due to the removal of a brain tumor.

"He was very civicly minded," said Bernad Fontana, a retired UA Field Historian who was asked by Officer's wife to organize the memorial service.

Fontana and Officer were anthropology students together at the UA.

Associate professor of anthropology Richard Thompson said Officer always had many irons in the fire.

"He did a great job broadcasting the UA football games from 1945-60 while he was attending graduate school," Thompson said.

Officer earned his bachelor's degree in 1950 and doctorate in 1964 in anthropology, both at the UA.

A memorial service will be held June 14 at 5:50 p.m. in the Gallagher Theater. A reception will immediately follow at the Arizona Historical Society on Second Street at Park Avenue.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta; daughter, Sarah; sister, Marjorie Officer-Thomas of Garnett, Kan.; brother, Forrest of Cottage Grove, Minn. A son, James R. Officer, preceded him in death two years ago.
