Editor:
I had never been disgusted with the content of the Wildcat until I read Becky Hailey's benighted letter ("Reader disgusted by content of Wildcat," Dec. 11). Yes, Ms. Hailey, I am now in a bind.
First of all, the "f-word" at which you are so indignant was printed in the context of a quotation € in Police Beat. Admittedly, this word is not a sophisticated form of expression but its printing was appropriate given the circumstance. I doubt the Wildc at intended to sound "tough" or "cool," as you allege.
Second, your suggestions for the betterment of sexual education are inane and implausible. If, as you boast, you came to the university "to get a higher education," why do you protest an advertisement that helps serve this very end? Sex Talk is meant to e ducate students, and though it may not be adademic per se, it does provide students with the necessary facts to make educated decisions in their sex lives. You claim students who want to learn more about sex should "watch a talk show, read porno magazines or start a support group." This is ridiculous. Talk shows deal with the most infrequent sexual behavior. Only a small percentage of the population would learn anything from "Transsexual Mothers Who Hate Their Children" or "My Lover is a Necrophiliac" on Geraldo. Furthermore, reading pornography is not necessarily educational (with the exception of anatomy). Sex would not be a very loving or personal endeavor if pornography served as the paradigm for healthy sexual intercourse. Finally, feelings of anxiet y or embarrassment may deter individuals form "going public" with their sexual inquiries. Sex Talk provides students with anonymous education that may help them make informed decisions later on.
Much can be said about your specious political argumentation. Interestingly, I note that you take the same attitude toward the "f-word" and sex as some do toward team mascots: with offense. You also bring up the perennially controversial Rush Limbaugh. Am id your political onanism you claim that "most women don't like him because he speaks the truth, and many women can't handle the truth." Such generalizations prove your crass misconceptions, Ms. Hailey. Who are you to say what most women can or cannot han dle, especially in such intangible subjects as "the truth"? Rush Limbaugh is infamous for his clever manipulation of the masses, ingeniously creating an invidious dichotomy between conservatives and liberals, referring to the respective parties as "us and them." You, Ms. Hailey, serve as an excellent example of this unfortunate division between the masses with your dogmatic and cliched opinions.
I noticed you are an education freshman, which probably means you plan to pursue a career in teaching future generations, or something to that end.
Let me make a suggestion: work on your own education first.
