Late-night trucks deliver annoyance to residents

The late-night noise from delivery trucks at the Park Student Union is disturbing residents of adjacent Kaibab-Huachuca Residence Hall, said a hall resident.

Mary Goetz, business and public administration freshman, said the noise from the delivery trucks is "really annoying."

She said the noise comes from engines left running and beeping noises made when the trucks back up.

Domino's Pizza delivery trucks have been making deliveries to the Park Union as late as 1 a.m., right outside the windows of rooms on the south side of the hall. The union's loading dock is in an alley facing Kaibab-Huachuca.

Jerry Groch, cash operations manager for the University of Arizona Student Unions, said most vendors in the union rarely accept deliveries after 4 p.m. But because Domino's has a lease with the UA, it has control over its own delivery times, he said.

Jim Gerety, commissary manager for Domino's, said the trucks make deliveries for the company's three stores at the Park and Memorial student unions, and an off-campus location at 1033 N. Park Ave. on the same trip. Domino's makes the deliveries on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, he said.

"We are not allowed into the (Memorial) Student Union until after 10 p.m. because we use front-door access," Gerety said. "So we face a dilemma with our delivery schedule."

Domino's schedules its deliveries to their three campus stores around the Memorial Union's scheduling, he said.

Gerety said this same issue was brought to his attention before last year, but a schedule could not be worked out to please everyone. When Domino's attempted to make its deliveries earlier in the day to the Park Union, traffic and parking problems occurred, he said.

Gerety said he believes that, ideally, deliveries should occur between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Carolyn Rudinsky, business freshman and another Kaibab-Huachuca resident said, "They keep the engines running all night." She said she does not understand why the engines are not turned off while the trucks are being unloaded.

"We'll try to see if we can work something out," Gerety said. He said he will look into the situation again and see if something can be done about the delivery schedule.
