Engineering Career fair helps students with job counseling

The "Industry Expo '97 Career Fair" is promoting engineering at the UA this week.

"We're showing students what it is we do," said Mack Romero, mechanical engineering senior and vice president of corporate affairs for the Engineering Student Council.

Romero said the goal is to provide engineering students of all majors with workshops on r‚sum‚ writing and job searching, along with opportunities for cooperative employment and job interviews.

Amina Sonnie, program coordinator for the College of Engineering and Mines, said "It will give them skills they need to get a job in the future."

Recruiters will be on the Mall today between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. accepting r‚sum‚s and conducting interviews. Romero said this is an annual event.

Representatives will be present from the U.S. Navy, Hughes Aircraft, Hughes Missile Systems, Intel and McDonnell Douglas.

McDonnell Douglas will also display a helicopter on the Mall, Romero said.

The Industry Expo dinner was held last night at the Union Club. Engineering students had the opportunity to welcome job recruiters to the University of Arizona and promote the engineering college, Romero said. He said students were able to talk casually with recruiters in a non-interview setting.

Tours of the UA Mirror Laboratory, Nuclear Reactor Laboratory and Hydrodynamics Lab will be given tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

"These are labs where research is done," Romero said. He added all laboratories are applications of engineering processes being put to work.

Engineering Club competitions and electric vehicle displays will be on the Mall Friday. Competitions will include an egg drop from the top of the Chemistry and Biological Sciences building to see if students' containers will protect the eggs from breaking.

"The competitions will show how you can use engineering to solve problems," Romero said.

The Engineers Grande Picnic will end the week by giving students a chance to meet each other.

"We invite all engineering students to come out and have fun," Romero said.

The Career Fair is sponsored by the College of Engineering and Mines and the Engineering Student Council.
