UA not taking Aztecs lightly

Simply brushing off opponents is no longer an option for the Arizona men's tennis team.

The Wildcats learned their lesson last week after being shutout by UCLA and Southern Cal in consecutive matches in Los Angeles.

"We have no right to take anyone lightly," freshman Jean-Noel Lacoste said. "We have to take every match seriously and just think about winning."

Arizona (3-2 overall, 0-2 in the Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division) hosts unranked San Diego State tomorrow at noon at Robson Tennis Center.

Although Arizona has not played the Aztecs (3-1, 0-1 in the Western Athletic Conference) in recent years, they expect a challenging match.

"I don't know much about them, but one of their players just won a tournament in San Diego and I expect them to be tough," UA head coach Bill Wright said.

Aztec Nguey Lay, who won his flight in the San Diego Invitational earlier this month, is expected to play Lacoste in the number four position.

The Aztecs' No. 1 player, Bobby Hrdina, has yet to win a singles match this season.

The Aztecs come to Tucson after losing, 5-4 to Air Force on Sunday.

The Wildcats have put their LA woes behind them.

"We have to put last weekend aside, but it's not something you forget about," Wright said.

Newcomer Jerome Oliveri has not been able to play this season because of lower back pain. Oliveri practiced this week, is feeling better and Wright said Oliveri may see some action in doubles tomorrow.
