Track teams travel to Mountain Indoors

The Arizona men's and women's track teams will face their first major test of the season when they travel to Reno, Nev. to participate in the Mountain-Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships this weekend.

Arizona will face off with some familiar competition, as eight teams from the Pacific 10 Conference will compete - UCLA and USC will stay home. Also involved will be Big West Conference schools Boise State, Idaho, Long Beach State, Utah State, Portland and host Nevada.

"This is going to be our first major competition of the year against the major conference teams," UA head coach Dave Murray said. "We're just going to go in looking at it like a conference championship. We're going to do what we can to score points and get some NCAA qualifiers."

The Wildcats are coming off easy wins against Northern Arizona and Arizona State, whom they competed with the past two weekends.

Senior Dameon Ortiz set a school record with a time of 47.21 in the 400-meter dash last weekend, while senior Holly Montoya set her own record with a distance of 55-feet, 10 1/2-inches in the shot-put.

Arizona will have a bye week before travelling to Indianapolis for the NCAA Indoor Championships on Mar. 7-8.
