U of A - Today

  • Julia Balen of the Women's Studies Department will speak on "Bodies of Difference: Building Liberatory Alliances," in the Memorial Student Union Senior Ballroom from noon until 1 p.m.In addition, Ikenna Dieke, from the African American Studies Department speaks on "Irish Nationalist and African American and African struggles." Dieke's lecture examines the fundamental similarities in the experiences of the struggles and the diaspora of black people in Africa and those of the people of Ireland.

  • Building Academic Community, a speaker series, presents Helle Mathiasen, lecturer of Humanitites and Joseph S. Alpert Head of the Department of Medicine to speak on "Medicine and Literature," in the Memorial Students Union's Gallagher Theatre at 12:15 p.m.

  • The UA baseball team plays Eastern Michigan at Frank Sancet Field at 2:30 p.m.

  • Women in Science and Engineering present Sharon Glassman, writer, performer and journalist, to speak on "Water Over Time: a monologue of women and science," in the Memorial Student Union's Senior Ballroom from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Reception to follow.

  • Consciousness Studies Colloquium presents Harry T. Hunt, of Brock University in Ontario Canada, to speak on "The Use of Nonordinary States of Awareness for a Cognitive Psychology of Consciousness," in the Psychology Building Room 306 from 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Fact of the Day

There are 751 species in danger of extinction in the United States. There are 209 species labeled in America who are likely to become endangered species within the foreseeable future. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has approved 424 recovery plans for endangered species. Some recovery plans cover more one than one species.
