What's Going On...

Tonight:

"No Rhyme or Reason," a juried student art exhibit put together by your peers, opens this evening at Student Union Rotunda Gallery on the third floor.The opening reception and prize ceremony takes place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Julie Sasse at 621-6147 can answer any questions you might have.

You might also want to ask her about ASU's neon workshop. Glass work from around the world is on display in the other Student Union gallery at the "Second Annual International Self-Illuminative Glass Exhibition."

Now this is our type of multicultural event... "La Femme Nikita," the action-packed and ultra-violent saga of a young, female gang member recruited to work as a hitwoman for the French Secret Service, plays at Gallagher tonight. Showtimes are 7:30 and 9:45 p.m.

Friday:

The Sociology brown bag lecture series continues, this time with "The Revolution from Within: Emotions, Identity, and Women's Self-Help Movements." This talk by Verta Taylor of Ohio State University takes place at Social Sciences room 415, from noon to 1:15 p.m.

Want Mohr? Noted author Nicholasa Mohr, author of "Growing Up Inside the Santuary of My Imagination," a nonfiction memoir was later turned into an ABC documentary, will be on campus Friday for a talk. "Growing Up Latina in the USA: A Writer's Perspective," happens at Kiva Auditorium in the Education building, from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. Details from Dana Fox at 621-1843.

Kidsdiggit: an announcement about Friday's Chronic Future show elicited screams from the masses of high school kids milling about on the mall the other day. But make no mistake, locals Shaft are going to blow those Scottsdale brats off the stage. Four bands, 5 bucks at the Arizona Ballroom. Doors open at 8:00 p.m.

Saturday:

Mat Bevel's highly-lauded "Surrealistic Pop Science Theater" returns this weekend with shows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Old-timers will remember the Mat Bevel Institute as the old D.P.C. building at 530 N. Stone (near the corner of Stone Ave. and 6th Street.) and showtime is always 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $6 and questions go to 622-0192.

Sunday:

Take me out to the Precolumbian ball game...The Tucson Museum of Art and the Tucson Visiting Arts Consortium presents a fre public lecture on ritual sport in the Americas, by Jane Stevenson Day. The talk will take place at The Tucson Museum of Art (140 N. Main Ave.) at 7:00 p.m.

Here's something you don't see everyday: queer punkers Pansy Division play at the Cellar this evening, with the Dragons (San Diego) and local hessians M”lt‰n L‰„th‰r opening. Tickets are $5 and the show is all ages.
