U of A - Today

  • The UA Poetry Center presents Richard K. Nelson, anthropologist, who will read selections from his 11 books at 8 p.m. in the Modern Languages Auditorium. Nelson has spent 30 years studying the relationship between native peoples and their environments.

  • The UA baseball team plays Radford University at 2:30 p.m. at Frank Sancet Field.

  • The American Red Cross is on the UA Mall collecting blood donations from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

  • The Building Academic Community Speaker Series presents James W. Clarke, professor in the Department of Political Science, to speak on "Black-on-Black Violence," in the Memorial Student Union's Gallagher Theatre at 12:15 p.m.

  • The Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium presents "The Comets Are Coming," a exploration into the nature and origin of comets at 7:30 p.m. The Laser Light Show features music by Pink Floyd's Darkside of the Moon at 8:30 p.m. General Admission is $6 and $5 for students.

  • The Math Department presents mathematicians to discuss famous unsolved and some no-longer unsolved problems in math such as the Goldbach Conjecture and Fermat's Last Theorem, in the Biology West Science Building Room 301 at 4 p.m.

  • The Undergraduate Society of Criminal Justice Studies presents an agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to discuss agency duties, undercover operations and future career opportunities in McClelland Hall Room 125 at 6 p.m.

  • The Memorial Student Union's Gallagher Theatre is showing "Microcosmos" at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Admission is $2.50.

Fact of the Day

Albert H. Condron, member of the 1914 football team and civil engineering student suggested to one of his professors that the class should survey Sentinel Peak (a.k.a. "A" Mountain) for the location of a large "A" to represent the university. Construction began on November 13, 1915 and was completed March 4, 1916. The cost of materials, equipment and transportation was $397. From March on Sentinel Peak was known as "A" Mountain.
