Women's golf travels to ASU Invitational

The Arizona women's golf team travels north today to the Valley of the Sun to compete in the Arizona State Invitational at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe.

The Wildcats are looking to regain the number-one national ranking, after San Jose State overtook them in this week's poll, dropping Arizona to second.

The tournament runs through Sunday on the par-72, 6,090 yard layout, and is the last tuneup for the Wildcats before they compete in the Pacific10 Conference Championships, April 21-23 in Tacoma, Wash.

Arizona will find a stiff test in the list of invitees, as all nine of their conference rivals will be competing this weekend, with each school hoping to establish themselves as a legitimate contender for the conference title. In addition, 13 of the 17 teams are ranked in the top 50, including Arizona.

No. 3 ASU, No. 5 Stanford , No. 11 Oregon and No. 12 UCLA are among the eight Pac-10 teams ranked in top 50, and are ready and waiting to take the conference trophy out of the hands of Arizona.

Also capable of making a run at the tourney title are No. 15 Texas A&M and No. 18 Texas Christian.

California, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Southern Cal, Washington and Washingotn State round out the tournament field.

Arizona is coming off a second place finish in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Hawaii last week, where they shot a three round total of 930, 14 shots behind San Jose State.

The Wildcats were without the services of the nation's top player, sophomore Marisa Baena, who took the opportunity to play in the LPGA's Dinah Shore Classic.

Baena returns to the lineup this weekend along with junior Heather Graff and freshman Jill Gomric, who led the solid effort in Hawaii by placing sixth and eighth, respectively.

Sophomore Krissie Register and freshman Jenna Daniels complete the fivesome competing for the Wildcats.

Rounds one and two will begin today and tomorrow at 8 a.m. and Sunday's final round begins at 7:30.
