Boys and Girls Club kids treated to fair freebies

Eleven-year-old Crystal Martinez normally would not have an opportunity to attend Spring Fling, but she was able to have fun on the rides and hang out with her friends for free Saturday.

Camp Wildcat, an Associated Students service club, formed a partnership with Spring Fling this year to bring 17 children, ages 7 to 12, from the Holmes Tuttle Boys and Girls Club to the carnival for a free afternoon of rides, pizza and games.

Crystal rode more than 11 rides during the hour before Spring Fling opened its gates to the rest of the public at noon, she said while eating an Eegee's donated by Minority Business Students Association.

Ten members of Camp Wildcat spent three hours with the children. After the rides, the children ate Domino's Pizza donated from Mortar Board and played free games donated by various ASUA clubs.

"They're loving it. They are getting to play all the games and the clubs are being great," said Kelley Van Auken, an economics and political science sophomore.

Van Auken, a Camp Wildcat member, coordinated the event.

She said Camp Wildcat sponsors day activities and a camp for Tucson children who do not normally get the opportunity to participate in the activities.

Eric Grosman, Camp Wildcat member and an undeclared freshman, said, "Everyone is very willing to help and excited to see the kids. The kids are loving it also. It is something they wouldn't usually get to do."

Heather Dunn, a women's soccer player and undeclared freshman, said it was nice to see her kiddy game booth help the children have fun.

Pi Kappa Phi and UA women's soccer ran Dino Jump, one of 14 game booths that offered the children an opportunity to play for free.

The children were also given snacks donated by 13 clubs who operated 10 food booths.
