Rugby team ends perfect season

The Arizona rugby team closed out a perfect conference season at 7-0 with an 80-5 walloping of New Mexico State on Saturday.

"We're very pleased with our performance," UA head coach Dave Sitton said. "But there is a lot of work to be done."

The Wildcats ended the year with a 14-2 mark overall, and will face Air Force in the opening round of the West Regional at Berkeley, Calif. next Saturday. The other side of the bracket will feature Indiana and defending-national champion California.

"It's like going into Yankee Stadium," said Sitton of the 11 national title banners which adorn Cal's $3 million rugby-only stadium.

Arizona was led by center Al Lakomskis' three touchdowns. The Aggies had jumped out to a 5-0 lead on the Wildcats, but Arizona went on to score 80 unanswered points en route to the blowout victory.

The victory margin was the largest in school history, topping the 70-0 score by which they defeated Reed College in November of 1995.
