Bruins dominate UA baseball

The UCLA baseball team made it clear why it is ranked first in the conference in hitting by pounding Arizona 13-6 on Saturday and 11-3 on Friday in the first two games of the three-game series in Los Angeles.

The rubber game was played late yesterday.

Bruin senior left fielder Jason Heinrichs lead the offensive charge on Saturday, hitting his 17th and 18th home runs of the year and notching three RBI and two runs scored on the day.

Sophomore Tom Jacquez (8-1) shut down the Wildcats, allowing six hits and four walks in eight innings of work. Only three of the six runs were earned, with UCLA committing three errors. Jacquez struck out eight.

The No. 5 Bruins (31-10-1, 11-6 in the Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division) moved past Arizona into sole possession of second place, and are now only two games behind Stanford for the conference lead. No. 19 Arizona fell to 29-18, 11-9 in the Six-Pac.

Sophomore left-hander James Johnson (4-5) took the loss for the Wildcats. Johnson went five innings, gave up seven hits while walking four and struck out four. Only four of the 10 runs he allowed were earned.

The only UA offensive highlight was from junior Diego Rico, who went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

In the series opener, Bruin pitcher Jim Parque (11-0) continued his dominance in college baseball.

He allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out nine in his complete-game victory.
