Column illustration undermines the Equal Rights Amendment discussion

Editor:

We as women at the University of Arizona would like to respond to "Girl Power: the rebirth of the ERA" on Thursday. The article, although well written, was completely undermined by the cartoon beneath it. Jeremy Pepper writes about the fact that women should be treated equally yet follows it with a chesty, navel-showing vapid caricature with a side ponytail and her finger in her mouth. To us, this insinuates the very stereotype that is the antithesis of Pepper's column.

While the cartoon may have been intended as a sarcastic commentary, it fails to be funny. This stereotype of the female sex is exactly why it has taken Congress as long as it has to recognize women as equals and not as sex objects. We hope that this cartoon does not represent Mr. Pepper's view of the very women he is seeking to free from sexual discrimination.
