Dangers of animal research often exaggerated for political purposes

Editor:

I would like to comment on the recent animals rights event that occurred on the Mall on Wednesday. I feel it is necessary to give everyone all the facts. Animals rights groups claim animal research is carried out without checks and that research is done on occasion just to garner grants. This is a gross misrepresentation of the grant and research process. Animal research carries some of the most stringent checks and balances before a grant is even considered. A researcher must prove to research-governing bodies that the proposed research meets certain base criteria. These include proof that the animals will not be mistreated or harmed Ä the use of analgesics and anesthetics are required for most procedures involving animals. All persons coming in contact with the animals must be certified to handle the animals in a safe and humane manner. The largest burden is proving the use of animals is absolutely necessary. The research to be gathered can in no way be a repetition of a previous study. As well, if the data can be reasonably inferred from the combination of other studies, then the use of animals is denied. Also, if the data can be gathered by any other means that does not use animals, it must be used, such as cell culture or computer model. Researchers have as much concern for animal well being as we do for that of humans. The rigorous protocols prove our willingness to limit animal testing whenever possible.

Animal testing is a choice of last resort. Not only is it expensive but sometimes variables in animals are uncontrollable. Animals are not used for frivolous or petty reasons. The restrictions prevent this. I hope some of the information in this letter helps my fellow students come to an informed decision on the position of animal research. It is important to limit such studies, but the use of animals is sometimes very necessary. Research for medical and pharmaceutical advancements saves lives, sometimes both of animals and mankind.
