Campus cyclists deserve right of way in bike lanes

Editor:

I can't help but to respond to the "Cynic on Parade" column aboutout of control bicyclists in Friday's Wildcat. Is Chris Badeaux trying to be funny, or is he really as hair-brained as he sounds in the column? I don't ride a bike much on campus, and I'm not going to try to hard to defend cyclists in this letter, but Chris, it is called the "Bike Lane" for a reason.

As a pedestrian trying to cross a street, even if there is a crosswalk, you should look both ways before you strut across the street. There's something about the physics in getting creamed by a guy on a bike that doesn't strike me as too much fun, and the suggestion that you carry rocks to protect yourself and defend the rights of the pedestrian on the sidewalk strikes me as just barely falling above his theoretical mean IQ of 12

Chris suggests to "imagine what sort of damage a bike moving at high speed can do to the human body", and with that in mind, I suggest you keep an eye open and look out. And hey, if you want to carry rocks for protection, I can imagine these "maniac" cyclists retaliating with croquet mallets or baseball bats.

Personally, I'm not into getting hit by bikes, rocks or bats, and most anyone with an IQ above 12 would agree that we ought to avoid the whole pain factor and not challenge those in position to cause us great bodily harm.
