Gas line rupture one of several building errors

Editor:

According to Mr. Murphy of McCarthy Construction, "our always, always rule is 'don't dig without blue staking.'" His explanation for the ruptured gas line last Thursday at the Environmental and Natural Resources Building construction site ("Gas line ruptu res at construction site," Sept. 13) was that "people do make errors," conveniently blaming the error on the employee who had started digging without making sure the area was safe, as if the employee had any way of judging where the gas line was on the un staked site.

Yes, people do make mistakes, but they are eventually supposed to learn from their mistakes. By my memory, last Thursday's was the THIRD occurrence of a gas line rupture on that construction site. There has also been at least one fire, which caused smoke to enter the neighboring Life Sciences South Building, resulting in its evacuation. I wonder how many more errors have to be made before McCarthy Construction decides to follow their "always, always rule."
