Nazi label used during debate was 'poignant intellectual comparison'

Editor:

I write in reference to recent articles entitled "'Ignorance and insensitivity' still exist in academia" and "Nazi salute was an unprofessional ploy" (Sept. 25). I would like to take this opportunity to admit that while I stand 100 percent behind my teammate, Bret Rosson, in his poignant intellectual comparison of the Democratic education plank and the writings of some of the world's best known fascists, I do admit that my Nazi salute was overzealous.

While I apologize for any offense taken, I also challenge the Young Democrats to resist the urge to hide behind the word "Nazi" long enough to rebut the solid intellectual claim that there are notable eerie parallels between the Democratic plank on education and the writings of fascists intelligently. You might also consider attempting to gather and study enough scholarly sources to prevent your having to resort to weak rebuttals such as "Home schooling is horrible," asking an audience member for a definition of "competitive marketplace," and trying to bleed the Ninth Amendment and the Elastic Clause for nonexistent constitutional support of our compulsory education laws. Reading all relevant party platforms before a debate is helpful, too, in preventing your having to ask your opponents for their position on the issue during the debate.
