Students looking for jobs or internships may want to attend the 16th annual Career Week '96, which begins today with a guest speaker from Wal-Mart.

Lee Scott, executive vice president of merchandising and sales for Wal-Mart, will speak on "Keys to Successful Leadership in a Global Marketplace" at 3 p.m. in Gallagher Theater. The Southwest Retail Center for Education and Research, in the College of Family and Consumer Resources, is bringing him to the University of Arizona.

Ellen Goldsberry, director of the Southwest Retail Center for Education and Research, said Scott will be identifying the skills, characteristics and challenges facing young people as they enter their careers in the business world.

"Wal-Mart is an exceptionally strong supporter of our center and a leader in retail education," she said.

Representatives from almost 200 companies are scheduled to attend an open house tomorrow and Wednesday to recruit students for jobs after graduation. Career Week is designed to help students meet many employers at once, said Andrea Tellez, marketing senior and one of two student Career Week coordinators.

Tellez said students going to the event "will get out of it what they put into it. If you go in with rsums, looking and acting professional and networking, you'll get a lot more out of (the event)."

About 2,000 students visited with recruiters in the open house last year, said Jennifer Lyons, retail and consumer studies senior and student Career Week coordinator. She said she expects close to 3,000 people this year.

Lyons said Career Week is extremely helpful for students.

"Recruiters are on campus specifically looking for students and new graduates," she said.

Tomorrow is Business, Liberal Arts and Retail Day, and Wednesday is Engineering, Science and Agriculture Day. Employers from each career field will be answering students' questions and accepting resumes. The events will be in the Rincon Room Lobby of the Memorial Student Union from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
