UAPD officers paid well enough for their jobs

Editor:

I just grabbed today's Wildcat and the first thing I see is an article about UAPD officers and their salaries ("UAPD starting salary less than TPD, some officers upset," Oct. 10). Being interested in issues surrounding labor economics, I had to take a peak! Boy, what a wasted space in the Wildcat and wasted effort of your reporter. Don't we all agree that UAPD officers are merely security guards/officers and thus that their salaries should not be equal to their Tucson Police Department counterparts. I think that reading the Police Beat everyday tells us enough about the "dangerous" actions our UAPD police officers encounter: the usual campus perverts, but mostly bicycle or backpack thefts.

I also enjoyed to find out that the starting salary for UAPD officers is $25,478, and that for individuals with a bachelor's or even an associate's degree. I believe that this is quite a generous starting salary for individuals with that amount of education.

Let's address some more important financial issues such as faculty salaries and, as a graduate student I have to address this issue, graduate students' salaries and the fact that graduate students have absolutely no benefits package.

And what about child care programs here at the UA, one of probably few universities here in the United States without an on-campus child care facility (yes, I am also a father)?

So drop the salary issue of the campus security guards/officers and address more interesting issues, please!!
