Ride with UAPD to see dangers they encounter

Editor:

I would like to respond to Mr. Roelant L. Verbeek's letter ("UAPD officers paid well enough for their jobs," Oct. 14). I appreciated your letter about your UA police officer's salaries. I found it interesting to note those areas of danger you addressed in your letter.

Unfortunately, the police beat reporter does not cover the extent of danger and other life threatening situations UAPD officers are involved in on a daily basis. While I will not begin to address the issue of salaries for our faculty, staff or other university graduate and student employees, I will make one request. Before you judge the extent of danger a UAPD officer is exposed to outside of the incidents reported in the police beat section, please join me in riding along with a UAPD officer on Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday night. After you have ridden with a UAPD officer for her/his shift, then you can judge the extent of danger these officers are exposed to on a daily basis.

I look forward to riding with you in the near future. In fact, I will offer an open invitation for our campus community to ride along with a UAPD officer anytime to have the opportunity to see the different types of activities, crime situations and emergency responses a campus police officer handles daily. This service is free and will provide anyone who participates with some practical education on campus policing.

Harry R. Hueston II
UAPD Deputy Chief
