- The UA Mathematics Department presents "Math Movies: Weird Geometries," in the Bio West building Room 301 at 4 p.m.
- "Geometry in the Machine Age," with mathematician Mel Slugbate will discuss real estate in hyperbolic space: why, in hyperbolic space, the suburbs are so popular and four-sided houses are not. The film is 35 minutes long.
- "The Shape of Space," with mathematician Jeff Weeks will answer the question on how to visualize a curved three-dimensional space and how to know if you have lived in one.
- The English Department and the UA Associated Students Bookstore presents an evening with authors who have written on the American West, in Modern Languages auditorium at 8 p.m.
- Sam Bingham, author of the Last Ranch , is an environmenta l consultant whose book tells the story of North American desertification and its effects on the people of Colorado's San Luis Valley.
- Kathleen Dean Moore, author of Riverwalking , is a philosopher whose book is a collection of her observations of nature, death and parenthood within the desert landscape.
- The School of Music and Dance presents the Arizona Contemporary Ensemble in Crowder Hall at 8 p.m. A pre-concert talk will take place in the Music building, Room 162 at 7 p.m.
Admission is free.
- Richard Felciano, of UC Berkeley, who will perform Five Pi eces for Piano and "Camp Songs" will speak about his music and compositions at the pre-concert talk.
- James Primosch will perform "Sacra Conversazione" and Earle Brown will perform "Sign Sounds."
Fact of the day
There were 65 reported violent crimes on campus in 1995, including one sexual assault, eleven aggravated assaults, 47 assaults and six robberies. There were 26 arrests for violent crime charges. Two were for aggravated assaults and 24 were for assaults.
