It's time for students to roll up their sleeves and let the blood flow for the UA vs. ASU Blood Donor Challenge, which celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year.

The challenge, which began Monday and runs through Friday, is a contest between the campuses of the University of Arizona and Arizona State University to see which can donate the most blood. The winner gains the right to a 3-foot Eagle Trophy for the next year.

ASU won the trophy last year with 1,175 pints of donated blood. The UA donated 1,098 pints. Over the last nine years, the UA has won the trophy five times, ASU four times.

Paula Santa Cruz, American Red Cross representative, encouraged everyone to come out and donate.

"We need to bring the trophy home," she said.

She said all of the Tucson area mobile blood donor buses are reserved for the challenge.

"Our goal is to beat ASU," she said, "and to collect as much blood as possible."

The Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross sponsors three contests to encourage blood donation on the UA campus, she said.

Each contest has two divisions, one for campus residence halls and one for fraternities and sororities.

The first contest - the Banner Trophy - is given to the house and hall which displays the best banner during the week of the drive. Each banner must list the dates of the drive and the week's theme - "Let the Challenge Begin."

The second set of trophies go to the house and hall with the highest percentage of donors.

The last set of trophies go to the house and hall with the highest number of donors.

Sigma Kappa sorority is one of several campus organizations helping run a blood drive location.

Retha Butkay, president of Sigma Kappa, said her organization has set a goal of 100 percent participation.

"We want everyone to donate," she said, "and if they can't donate themselves, we are encouraging them to find someone to donate on their behalf."

Butkay said that last year, Sigma Kappa won both the banner competition and the contest for the most blood donated by a single Greek house.

Donor registration is in the Memorial Student Union President's Lounge.
