Department of Education a 'useless appendage'; needs to be eliminated

Editor:

Your title, "Dole's views on education harmful to nation's children," (Oct. 28) irks me not a little. It's as bad as the lies propagated by trade union advertising referring to cuts to kids, seniors and school lunch. A systems engineering junior surely must know what a cut is. Please explain to your readers (if there are any after this column) your perception of a "cut." Is an increase a cut? Under what circumstances, etc. ad infinitum.

Your friend John to whom you allude in the column doubtless had some things going for him besides those to which you refer. I happen to agree with Mr. Dole in his views with respect to the Department of Education; only his view is to eliminate said department, not just cut it. It's a useless appendage these days. This department may well be subsumed under the Department of Labor - after all, they propound identical philosophies.

President Clinton has no ideas. He reacts to what the Republicans suggest. Is that what our citizenry wants in the presidency? The "inhale" bit is an apt reflection of character, a trait the American public has perhaps lost sight of in recent years.

Excuse me for responding in this manner. I just happened to read the column and felt you should not go unscathed.
