Way back in 1989, the Arizona volleyball team defeated Arizona State twice in the same season.

Four years later, in head coach Dave Rubio's first trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Wildcats (15-8 overall, 6-7 in the Pacfic 10 Conference) managed to beat ASU in five games in the second round. They haven't beaten the Sun Devils (8-11, 3-10) since.

"We need to exorcise some demons against ASU," Rubio said. "The fact that it's ASU brings some excitement and drama to the match."

Today's game will be played at McKale Center at 8:30 p.m. Anyone with a valid student ID will be admitted for free.

Club lacrosse

Before the Laxcats wrap up their 1996 fall exhibition season they'll face one more test.

The UA's club lacrosse team will travel to Phoenix tomorrow to take on the Phoenix Lacrosse Club. The match is at 1 p.m. at Tempe Diablo Stadium. The Laxcats are 3-1 in exhibition play.

"When it comes to Phoenix teams, you never know who's going to play, with such a broad base to draw players from," Laxcats head coach Mickey-Miles Felton said.

"Club players are definitely more aggressive. They are much more active with their sticks than we're accustomed to."

Felton denied that a possible goalie controversy between Laxcats C.J. Seitz and David Beer will be settled in Phoenix.

"We're not looking to find a starting goalie," Felton said. "They have both improved. They were both a little rusty at the start of the fall."

Regardless of the results of tomorrow's contest, the Laxcats are assured of finishing the exhibition season with a winning record. Felton said that he looks to continue the momentum gained in the exhibition season into the regular season.

"If we can get through this game feeling good about what we are doing in the fall, it will be a good stepping stone for the spring," Felton said.

Men's club rugby

The Arizona men's club rugby team is prepared to knock off its three opponents at this weekend's annual Domino's Classic Tournament.

The Wildcats (2-1) will face off with San Diego, Northern Arizona and New Mexico State.

Arizona finished second at the University of Wyoming Invitational on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 in Laramie, Wyo.

Sitton said San Diego will be the team to beat during tomorrow's tournament.

"They have a very good program," Sitton said.

He said the Wildcats beat San Diego last March, a reason it makes their match more interesting.

The one-day tournament takes place at the UA soccer fields at 15th Street and Plumer Avenue. The junior varsity games begin at 9 a.m. The first round for the varsity teams begin at 10 a.m.

Sitton said the team has learned to recover the ball more quickly and hold onto the ball longer.

"You also would see a basic and fundamental running of the ball, as well as how the team is physically fit," Sitton said. "We've worked on that for this fall season."

Sitton also said the four freshmen that went to New Zealand to play for amateur leagues and teams are still young, but are responding well even though they have taken the pressure of the team upon themselves.

"They returned from a place where you better be good or you don't play," Sitton said.
