The College Station post office on East University Boulevard will remain open until January under a new, temporary arrangement. The U.S. Postal Service is seeking a permanent contractor to operate the station, and bids are being accepted, said Ron Abalos, manager of customer service support for the Postal Service in Phoenix.
David Hansen, current contractor for College Station, 913 E. University Blvd., explained that the temporary agreement that kept College Station open until the end of October has been extended until January.
Abalos said the Postal Service will award the bid to the lowest bidder that meets the specifications the Postal Service has for the position.
Hansen said he thought the post office gave him the go-ahead to make thousands of dollars of improvements to College Station, for which he still has not been reimbursed.
"From my point of view I could not get anything in writing because it takes too long. I was told if I went ahead with it the post office would back me up," Hansen said.
Earlier this year, College Station was threatened with closure when Hansen decided not to accept the Postal Service's offer to partially reimburse him for $20,000 in improvements.
College Station will remain open until a new contract is awarded, Abalos said.
"Our intention is no matter when it (the contract) starts, we would figure out a way to extend the temporary (contract). I don't foresee no services being available at College Station," he said.
"When we looked at it, it appeared to be way out of line for what we are getting," Abalos said of the Hansen's request for funds.
"Let's see if we can find someone who can run it for an amount that is more reasonable," Abalos said.
