The University of Arizona Police Department has suspects in at least one case of computer burglary and has released composite sketches in hopes of finding the two men.Police have a witness who saw two men near the Math building loading a truck with computer parts Aug. 13 about midnight, said UAPD Detective Sgt. Sal Celi. He said that the next morning, two computer systems were reported missing from the building, 617 N. Santa Rita Ave.
"We put two and two together," Celi said.
The first suspect is described as a 6-foot, blond, white male between 22 and 30 years old with a slender build. The second suspect is described as a 5-foot-6-inch Asian male with black hair, between 25 and 26 years old. The second suspect weighs about 130 pounds and has long bangs.
Both were seen loading a midsized beige or off-white pickup truck. The truck, which police suspect is a Dodge Ram, has a camper shell on it.
Two Sun Microsystem computers, three disk drives and a modem were taken, Celi said. He said the Mathematics Department valued the loss at $43,000.
"I would characterize this burglary as being done by someone who knew what they wanted," Celi said.
The two men broke a window on the ground floor of the building to gain entry and then exited through a door, Celi said.
"We're experiencing a continuing problem of computer thefts," Celi said.
Celi said the mode of operation was similar to that used in other burglaries around campus, and that the two suspects would face questions about a series of possibly related burglaries.
"We could match up evidence," Celi said.
Celi said the university community needs a greater awareness of suspicious activity. He said if the strange activity is reported immediately, and there is not a problem, there is no loss.
"If it's on the up-and-up, they go on their way," Celi said.
Anyone with information about the burglary or suspects should call university police at 621-UAPD.
