A charity event for the La Frontera Foundation begins today as the first large public event at the new Marriott University Park Hotel.

The Festival of Trees features three days of holiday events including entertainment, food and an opportunity to shop for holiday gifts. The festival is to benefit La Frontera, which provides mental health services to people in Pima County.

"This is a great first event for the hotel," said Alan Knight, banquet captain. "It's a good thing to do for the community to show our support."

This is also the first year of the festival, said Scott Place, president of La Frontera's foundation board.

"I have no idea how much money we'll make. We'll be happy if we break even," he said. "Our goal is to make a successful event and to make it as spectacular as possible."

Place said La Frontera would like to hold the Festival of Trees at the Marriott, 880 E. Second St., again next year.

Admission for the festival is $5 for adults and $2 for children. Today, senior citizens can enter for $2.50, and tomorrow, children 12 years and under are free with an adult admission. Fifty cents will be taken off of admission Sunday with the donation of a non-perishable food item.
