An exam in the Modern Languages building Wednesday night ended in the citation of 11 men on alcohol charges.The Sigma Chi fraternity pledges were cited for minor in possession of spirituous liquors after the University of Arizona Police Department responded to the building, 1423 E. University Blvd., at 9:35 p.m., police reports stated.
A building custodian called police after he saw several alcohol containers in a trash can outside Room 302. He also saw people with food and drinks in the classroom, in violation of building policy, reports stated.
Police entered the room and found 30 men who appeared to be taking a test. Several men had open beer containers under their desks and there was a 200 milliliter bottle of Jim Beam whiskey in the room, police reports stated.
Police spoke with the fraternity member who was administering the test. The member said it was a national Sigma Chi exam and the fraternity had reserved the room, police reports stated.
Police cited James I. Carter, 18, a resident of Babcock Residence Hall, 1717 E. Speedway Blvd.; Derek W. Sutherland, Brian D. Hohl and Richard S. Palmer, all 18-year-old residents of Coronado Residence Hall, 822 E. Fifth St.; Samuel L. Reidy, 18, of the 400 block of East Fourth Street; Peter F. Klarin, age unknown, of the 1000 block of East Blacklidge Drive; Michael B. Burke and Craig H. Ganster, 19-year-old residents of Graham-Greenlee Residence Hall, 610 N. Highland Ave.; Kevin R. Harbour, 18, of the 8000 block of East Brookwood Drive; Jason M. Felix, 20, of the 1500 block of West Chapala; and Jarrod S. Hooper, 18, of the 3000 block of North Hillwood Circle. All were released at the scene.
The fraternity members were also asked to leave the building, police reports stated.
Early Wednesday morning, three other Sigma Chi pledges were cited for minor in possession in Lot 4055 at East First Street and North Cherry Avenue.
Police saw Peter C. Merkle, 19, a resident of Apache-Santa Cruz Residence Hall, 1420 E. Fifth St., and Jeremy J. Drake, age unknown, and Brad J. Spies, 19, both residents of Coronado Hall, walking west through the lot at 1:55 a.m.
Police reports stated the men happened upon a bag of empty beer bottles. The three picked up beer bottles and two of the men each threw a bottle before police approached, reports stated.
The men had bloodshot and watery eyes, according to police reports. They told police they had been drinking at the Sigma Chi house. Police cited the men for minor in possession and released them at the scene.
Justin Klump, president-elect of Sigma Chi's UA chapter, refused to comment yesterday. Jeff Cramer, the current president, could not be reached.
Dan Maxwell, director of student programs, who handles fraternity affairs for Greek Life, was out of town and unavailable for comment.
