Sheets will cover prominent works of art on campus today to recognize the artists who have been affected by AIDS.

"A Day Without Art" is a program that is celebrated in conjunction with World AIDS Day.

Though World AIDS Day was actually on Sunday, it is being recognized with activities sponsored by the University Activities Board and the Bisexual, Gay and Lesbian Association.

"We are covering the most pronounced works of art all over campus in observance of those artists that have died of AIDS," said Christina Palacio, UAB arts committee chair.

A candlelight vigil commemorating World AIDS Day is also planned for this evening by BGALA.

"This event is in memory of those who have died or are suffering from AIDS," said Keith Hilzendeger, classics junior and BGALA member.

The vigil will begin at 6 p.m. in front of the UA Associated Students Bookstore and the group will walk west toward the Arizona State Museum.

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, UAB and BGALA decided to celebrate World AIDS Day today, hoping for more student participation, Hilzendeger said.

The activities are in honor of those who have been affected by AIDS and are being independently sponsored by each group. The events coincidentally fell on the same day, Palacio said.
